A common assumption for trail running is that only "real" runners can participate in such an activity. Trail running is not just for one of those hippie type of guys. Trail running is also not a sport only for the most physically fit. Of course there are methods for easing yourself into trail running that should be practiced.
Trail running is an activity that nearly anyone with the capability to walk and jog can do. Before beginning an adventure into trail running some research on your behalf should be done. (Don't worry, this part is easy and not agonizing. )
Equipment
First you will need to invest in a pair of appropriate trail running shoes. Trail running shoes are very different than your average running shoe in that they have stiff, nobby soles with ridges. they provide immense stability and their tough materials will protect your feet from puncture wounds from unseen sharp objects.
Secondly you will need to invest in wicking garments, water bottles, a cap, sunscreen, a good pair of sunglasses, gaiters, anti-insect spray, ivy block and for some; an iPod and a good pair of headphones.
Starting Off
It is recommended that you should start off running on local trails that are known to be busy with other runners. You can find them by performing a search for your area such as "running trails in Los Angelos, California". The reason why it is suggested to run on busy trails is to secure your thoughts on saftey in general incase an emergency occur such as an injury.
To make trail running even more enjoyable try to find a partner to run with. You can locate a running partner on findrunningpartners.com or by posting a local ad on Craigslist.
When you first start trail running, take your time. It's not a race and you should just be focusing on getting a feel for running on uneven terrain and saving your energy for proceeding uphills. Take your time until you feel confident and then you can start pushing yourself harder.
